Please note that live animals are not used in these programs.

NEW FOR SPRING 2010

In conjunction with World Environment Day, RQ offers a new classroom session customized for grades K - 8.

An interactive Pittsburgh Biodiversity quiz opens the exploration what biodiversity is, and how industrial and urban development, municipal wastewater management and the introduction of invasive species affect natural flora and fauna.

Age-appropriate activities and simulations illuminate population dynamics and illustrate how human actions can have an impact on natural systems. Tips for helping to protect biodiversity on a local, regional and global level bring the discussion full-circle and back to a revisiting of the introductory quiz. Three separate Pennsylvania Academic Standards based versions are offered in order to serve audiences from grade 3 to adult.

Versions:

• 45-90-minute school site programs for grades 3-12
• 45-minute off-site group presentations for all ages

AVAILABLE 2010.  May 2010 dates may be limited.

Dive Into Mammals

Introduce your students to the wonders of mammals that live in and around the waters of Western PA. Preserved animal pelts and skulls help everyone figure out that what makes animals different is what makes them very special and able to live in different places.

Bridge City, USA

Time to build a bridge! Pittsburgh has more bridges per person than any other place on earth! Students explore the very basics of bridge building and try their hand at constructing some bridges and arches, and learn about the Western Pennsylvania bridge history.

Mountain, River, Sea and Sky

Around the water cycle we go, as students learn how water is crucial to every living thing on Earth! Students experiment with water to build their own watershed. Hands-on activities teach about rain, erosion, water pollution, and water filtration.

Pittsburgh Fish Stories

What's really living beneath the water?   Learn about the fish that inhabit Pennsylvania streams and rivers, and observe pictures and preserved specimens to see how their shapes and physical characteristics suit them for specific environments.

Each RiverTales program comes with a take-home pamphlet that students can share with parents to continue the learning and fun after school!
