Bayer Sustainability Camp - July 16-28, 2010

 

Our world-class 2-week international residential camp, sponsored by Bayer USA Foundation and Bayer Science & Education Foundation, returns this summer for its third year in Pittsburgh..  Students age 14-16 can apply for acceptance into the program through scholarships awarded by the sponsors.

This innovative camp has been designed for a select group of international teenagers who will join together for two weeks of environmental exploration, adventure and fun while learning about climate change and environmental sustainability through the lenses of Western Pennsylvania river ecosystems.  More camp details may be found below in the Program Overview.

 

HOW TO APPLY

1. Download and print this document for instructions on how to submit an application for acceptance into the 2010 Bayer Sustainability Camp at RiverQuest in Pittsburgh.

2. Complete the application according to the directions on the application form. Note the  following details:

  • Application – to be completed by student and signed by a parent or legal guardian
  • Answer to the essay question – to be completed by the student in your own words and handwriting/printing – “What are your individual ideas and views on sustainability, and why would you and your community benefit from your participation in this Camp?”
  • Required Signatures must be included.

Program Overview

Bayer Sustainability Camp is a two-week residential summer camp in Western Pennsylvania, USA that provides hands-on group learning about environmental sustainability and global climate change through rural and urban river experiences that are fun, academically challenging, and physically engaging.

 


Participants:

Participating students may be 14 to 16 years of age (high school grades 10-11). The program is expected to serve 12-15 students representing the United States and the European Union.


Dates:

Bayer Sustainability Camp dates are July 16-28, 2010, with the morning of July 29 denoted as travel day. The program encompasses 12 days of residential camp facilitated by RiverQuest, Pittsburgh, PA.

RiverQuest Staffing:

RiverQuest dedicates 2 professional staff members to live and work with students for the entire Camp. Staff will meet students at Pittsburgh International Airport, and at Duquesne University for local students.  Staff will provide a unified, integrated experience for their entire stay by debriefing activities, managing group dynamics, and linking experiences to core themes of sustainability and climate change.


Lodging and Meals:

Housing, breakfast and dinner will be on campus at Duquesne University, and lunch most often on site at RiverQuest or other area locations near to field trip sites. All meals, lodging, and ground transportation for camp activities are included.  Participating students are encouraged to bring some spending money if possible for snacks, souvenirs and shopping!

Camp Activities:

Participants who are accepted to the camp will receive a complete camp agenda in June 2010.  Camp Activities include:

  • Hands-on field explorations of freshwater ecology
  • Program-long residence at historic Duquesne University in Pittsburgh
  • Site Visits to university and industrial experts in sustainability
  • Unique outdoor locations and recreational opportunities throughout
